Hair Transplantation

The permanent solution for hair loss

A hair transplant or hair restoration surgery is the only permanent solution for hair loss. It is a minimally invasive elective cosmetic procedure used to treat a receding hairline or baldness, primarily secondary to Androgenic Alopecia. The goal of this procedure is to restore the aesthetic appearance of an individuals hair, resulting in restoring their confidence. The procedure aims to provide an improved appearance in comparison to the current situation by transplanting a planned number of hair grafts from the resistant donor region (back & sides of the head), into the regions where the hair is receded or thin. When effectively performed with realistic expectations it can provide exceptional hair growth, thickness & aesthetic improvement. The procedure involves the following steps with an illustrated guide that will walk you through the entire process. We incorporate the latest international technology & techniques in our innovative hybrid micro FUE hair transplants, combining the best parts of the traditional forcep methodology with a new blunt implanter technique to enhance graft protection & optimise overall results.

Step 1:

Consultation with a Medical Doctor, discussion of your hair loss journey & exploring all treatment options. Further discussion re any medications/vitamins/medical issues you may have, the associated risks, reasonable expectations & number of grafts required.

Step 2:

Design of the hair line with the patient & addressing any questions. Discussing pre and post op medications & long term therapy to maintain hair volume & longevity of pre existing & transplanted hairs. Finally arranging informed consent and the Pre-Op Photographs.

Step 3:

Procedure day, arrive early and meet the doctor & team of qualified nurses. You will be given a mild sedative (diazepam or midazolam) to allow you to relax during the prolonged procedure (on average 6-8 hours). Local anaesthetic (lignocaine & ropivacaine) will then be used to numb the donor & recipient areas & a tumescent solution with adrenaline / epinephrine to reduce localised bleeding.

Step 4:

The extraction phase. Micro follicular unit excision under magnification of hair grafts (hair follicles) from the donor region (the occipital, parietal & temporal areas of the scalp) in a careful, randomised fashion, under magnification to minimise scarring and irregular thinning of donor region. Storage of the precious hair grafts in a physiological serum. Sorting them into single, double & triple hair grafts which enables a graduated density appearance in the hair line. Therefore we take from the density of the donor region & add to the density of the recipient region.

Step 5:

The creation of incision sites in the recipient area (the frontal, mid scalp or vertex with hair recession). The recipient sites are created under magnification at a similar depth as the length of the extracted follicles, in the correct angles & direction to create a natural hair appearance.

Step 6:

The follicular units or hair grafts are then carefully inserted into the incision sites using our modified insertion technique which protects grafts and studies have shown improve outcomes.

A head bandage will be applied to the donor area after surgery for 2 days. Post op instructions including medications will be supplied. Any concerns patient is encouraged to contact their treating doctor immediately.

The transplanted hair grafts start to grow up 3-6 months after surgery. The final result will be apparent at the 12-18 month mark.

Note: Contrary to popular marketing there is no such thing as a scarless hair transplant procedure, as extracted hairs from donor site do not grow back. If you trim your donor site shortly or shave you may notice very small white dots on your scalp where the hairs where extracted, this is expected with all procedures. We minimise this by using magnification, meticulous controlled motorised extraction with small punches (0.9mm or smaller).

Subject to the degree of current & progressive baldness more than one hair transplantation procedure may be required to provide adequate coverage, density & the best result. Realistic expectations are important as it is often impossible to obtain an appearance of pre-existing hair volume in youth, however results often provide a significant improvement in hair appearance & boost in confidence. Post op medical therapy optimises results & ensures optimal longevity.

In summary, a A FUE hair transplant is a surgical procedure that involves individually extracting hair follicles from a donor area of thick hair and implanting them into areas with hair loss or thinning to promote natural hair growth.
